Visiting the website
This site has no account system or site analytics. Its own code does not set analytics or advertising cookies, and its fonts are loaded from your device.
The newsletter form connects to Substack only when you choose to load it. Substack may then receive your IP address and browser information and use its own cookies or similar technologies, even before you submit the form. You can leave the form unloaded and follow the direct subscribe link instead. See Substack’s privacy policy for details.
The hosting and network providers may process basic technical information such as your IP address, browser details, requested page and time of visit to deliver and protect the site. This is for the legitimate interest of running a secure, reliable website. How long technical logs are kept depends on those providers’ policies and settings.
Newsletter subscriptions
The signup form on this site is provided by Substack. When you subscribe, I receive your email address and any name you choose to provide so I can send the publication. I use this information with your consent. You can withdraw that consent at any time by using the unsubscribe link in a newsletter email.
Subscriber records are managed through Substack. Unsubscribing stops newsletter delivery; it is separate from asking for stored information to be deleted. Contact me to request deletion of information I control. Substack provides the signup, delivery and subscription tools and also handles information for its own purposes under its privacy policy, which explains its retention arrangements. Substack may process information outside the UK, including in the US.
Getting in touch
If you send me a message, I use the details you provide to read and reply to it. The basis is my legitimate interest in responding to enquiries. I keep messages for as long as needed to handle the conversation and any reasonable follow-up. The service you use to contact me may also process your information under its own terms.
Links to other sites
This site links to Substack and social platforms. Once you follow a link, that service is responsible for its own privacy practices. I do not control the information those services collect.
Your choices and rights
Depending on the circumstances, you may ask to access, correct or delete your personal information, or to restrict or object to its use. You may also have a right to data portability. Contact me using the method above and I will respond to requests about information I control. For information held by Substack or a social platform, contact that service too.
If you are unhappy with how your information is handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
